Whaley paces GHS thinclads at Rocky meet
As the calendar turns to May, the Greybull Buffs remain focused on making incremental improvements and putting themselves in the best possible situation heading into regional and state competition.
Just two regular season meets remain — the Lovell Invite later this week and the Bobcat Invite the following week.
No new state qualifiers emerged at Saturday’s Rocky Mountain Invitational, and with 3A rivals Worland, Lovell and Powell in attendance, team points were harder to come by for the Buffs. The girls placed seventh with 29 points and the boys eighth with 18.
Wyatt Whaley was the only GHS athlete who won an event. The sophomore threw 34 feet to win the shot put, topping a field of 30. Whaley hit “35-something” on one of her throws, but couldn’t stay in the ring and scratched, said Coach Nolan Tracy.
Whaley also placed fifth in the discus, throwing 98-10.
Marlee Henson placed third in the 400, finishing in 1:04.92, and also ran a leg on the third-place sprint medley relay team, where she was joined by Addison Coscarelli, Ashlyn Chacon and Adeline Kunkel. That foursome ran a 4:49.46, betting their PR by more than four seconds.
Turning to the boys, Nikoah Sorensen and Anthony Chacon led the team in the individual events. Each took fifth place — Sorensen in the 400 with a PR of 56.57 and Chacon in the 300-meter hurdles.
Greybull’s 400-meter relay team bettered the 2A qualifying standard for a third time this season. Each time, it has featured different runners. Jesse Brown has been the only constant, running the anchor on each trip around the oval.
The first time, when he was joined by Carter Peasley, Blade Baker and Anthony Chacon, the foursome ran what’s still its best time of the year, a 47.10. The second time, it was Peasley, Baker and Caiden Sorenson who preceded Brown and they produced a 47.28. The third time, it was Peasley, Chacon, Sorenson and Brown who combined for a 47.38.
“We’re trying a lot of different versions,” said Tracy, who added that a fourth — with Chacon in for Peasley — may run it later this week in Lovell. The idea is to give the team options and protect itself from injuries, Tracy said.
The Buffs are scheduled to compete at the Lovell Invite Friday, May 2. Tracy said Henson is on the verge of qualifying in the 400 meters and that his goal is to “get Carter (Peasley) over 5-10 in the high jump
“As far as my goal for the team, it’s always the same — to get as many PRs as we possibly can and see the kids heading in the right direction.”
