As a full disclosure, I wrote about 500 words about the actual business of filmmaking, which has been my bread and butter, and absolute passion, for the past decade, before realizing that I should reel it in — do you get the joke? — and focus on the real reason you read this column, which I don’t actually know, but assume is not that. All said, if you’d like to talk about four-quadrant filmmaking, the Paramount Accords, independent filmmaking in the 1970s, and why you can’t see a good movie fit for grown ups in 2024, come by on a Thursday morning and we can chat. I’ll bore you to tears, free of charge.

There is no prescription for those dealing with grief

As unique is our loss is as unique is our grief. What do we do when one day we can smile, laugh, and look back at memories with fondness and thankfulness for the life we shared with our loved one; the next day we feel paralyzed by our pain and sadness? We feel broken and feel as though we may never be our “old self” again? We may not like the answer…we feel what we feel. There is no twelve steps, timeline or prescription for our grief. New research supports that as unique as we are as humans, as unique as our relationships are, as unique as our brains, is as unique as how we will process our grief.

Mixed bag of news from the past week

A happy birthday to my friend Mary Lee, who “got old” with me on May 4. Now we are again equals. Hope you had a wonderful day, my friend.
The past week was a hodge-podge of events, both in “real life” and on the world front.
I took a trip over the mountain for a fun lunch with Joni, Sharon Meredith and Sheila Meredith Kampbell. Fun catching up, and always a lot of laughs just trading thoughts, memories, etc. We left Sheila’s to attend a track meet in Big Horn, slated to start at 5:15. It rained, it snowed, and snowed some more. The meet was set back to start at 5:30, then again at 5:45. In the end, they cancelled all field events and the entire meet involved just three relays — well, six because they ran both girls and boys. Kind of a wasted 90 minutes.

In a past life, I worked in entertainment. My water cooler conversations were often about what movie I’d last seen in theatres or what TV show I was watching, and I’d always reply, a bit sheepishly, that I didn’t own a television (my mother eventually got me one as a housewarming present during the pandemic), though I did love going to the movies. I know my answer was (is) decidedly unusual, especially in that world. I’d tell people I prefer reading, which is true, but I do like old movies and weird movies, and frequently commit to a television series years after it has its day in the sun. Recently though, I have been paying attention to “Under the Bridge,” an adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the murder of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl in British Columbia in the 1990s, the teenagers who’d done it and the moral panic it sparked.

Dear editor:
We were about to read “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll when we came across Cathy Kunkel’s letter (Greybull Standard - April 25, 2024) and realized that we could save time by reading her Reader’s Digest condensed version of the wacky classic.
Ms. Kunkel somehow finds an “insinuation” that immigrants are a “problem” from the observation by Marlys Good (a lady with a few more years and a lot more wisdom than some) that chants of “Death to America” in the White House are rather troubling. The only insinuation I see from Ms. Good is that chants of “Death to America” in the White House are rather troubling. Perhaps in equating Ms. Good’s remarks about these chants with a general bashing of all immigrants, Ms. Kunkel is insinuating that all immigrants wish death to America? This is a fascinating interpretation but one we must respectfully disagree with.

Political parties in Wyoming are private organizations. However, unlike most private organizations, they are bound, not only by the bylaws they create, but also by state statute, Title 22.
Since the Republican State Convention in mid-April, there has been some concern by people regarding proposed bylaws changes that were presented by a county in Wyoming, and even concern that the proposed changes ought not to have been considered in the first place. It is an important part of the process that ALL proposed state bylaws changes that are voted on during county conventions be discussed, amended, and voted on in the Bylaws Committee at the State Convention, to be presented to the full body of the convention for consideration. All proposed state bylaws changes submitted by counties get equal consideration in the committee.

May 1 came and went with nary a May basket left on my doorstep. But I wasn’t too surprised. There hasn’t been a May basket out there on May Day since my youngest moved out of second grade. So May Day is another tradition that has had its day — or its years — and is now just a memory.
Another tradition that has left us behind is baccalaureate. Long a tradition, graduates got to wear their caps and gowns for the first time the Sunday night before graduation the following Wednesday. Back in the “olden days,” which means when I graduated, and my two sisters before me, baccalaureate was the prelude to graduation. It was probably more meaningful to the female students. We donned formals (yes, back then, girls wore formals under their gowns), boys wore dress pants, and I can’t remember seeing a tennis shoe on any of the soon-to-be graduates.

As we approach the end of our 22nd season, I would like to thank our audience for trusting us to bring them health information that is current and accurate. There are many doctors out there who cannot make the same claims as the Prairie Doc’s and I would like to take this opportunity to help sort out those charlatans and quacks from trusted sources of health information.
While tasty and refreshing, I would not trust Dr. Pepper for medical advice. Nor would I trust Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, despite his claims that he went to “four years of Evil Medical School”. I like to read Dr. Seuss’ books, but I would not let him take a look. While I think he is a dear, I would not let him peek in my ear. He is not the doctor that I want to see if I needed an appendectomy.

Why do bad things happen to good people? It is a question, I think, most of us have asked ourselves rather often, particularly when bad things happen to people we love and care about, or to ourselves. Well, most often it is not actually a question, I think, as much as an outcry; it is not really that we are looking for explanations or other kinds of answers. In asking, we air our frustration in order to alleviate our emotional agony.
The answer Holy Scripture gives, though, and as such the Christian faith, has much to give by way of alleviating emotional agony; well, it does for those who have ears to hear.
