Another gem from a Greybull native

Jeff Tolman, a Greybull native, son of Bob and Freda Gould Tolman, retired lawyer and judge, is also a talented writer. The Standard has been blessed that he has shared his talent, his way with words, with us.

The week of truth is coming

This next week, Christians will have the realities of the faith set before us. Well, we have the realities of the faith set before us every Sunday when we gather for worship, as Christians do on Sundays; but during Holy Week, which begins this Sunday, shall we have the realities of the faith presented to us in particularly painful clarity, that the faith is not some fantasy about how it’s a wonderful life, and people are basically good at heart, and all will be well if only you count your many blessings and pretend that all things evil and ugly in this world are not there.
This Sunday shall see our Lord Jesus riding into Jerusalem, celebrated by a crowd waving palm branches and singing praises, all so wonderful; but as that vision is set before us, we will know that another tree lurks in the shadows. And Good Friday will set the most appalling image before us: the Son of God exposed to the most dreadful sufferings.

Letter to the Editor: Small-town newspapers connect the communities they serve

Dear editor:
Gotta say it.  I love small-town newspapers.  It’s just not right to think of Greybull without the Standard. And it’s not practical. The editor recently referred to the diminishing of area newspapers, and how the demand for them has changed. It didn’t paint a pretty picture for any of us.  
Small weekly papers can’t compete with Wall Street Journal, New York Times, European financial transactions, even statewide papers.  What local papers do best is fill the gaps and appreciate the “real news” in our own town.
A small-town paper highlights the sense of community that we need, to share life in a rural area.  A local newspaper can keep us connected.  An editor like Nathan Oster will do so, just as Bruce Kennedy did.  Let’s give the Standard a little encouragement.

Old papers provide frequent reminders of simpler times

Looking through archived Greybull Standards is not only fun, it’s educational. I am sometimes shocked by how many things I have forgotten about the town, community and school down through the ages (that I can recall with ease, that is).
I do remember “back in the good old days,” there was not just the junior prom, but the Sweetheart Ball, the Sadie Hawkins dance, the Senior Ball, the FFA dance and “sock hops” after some of the home basketball games. They all were something to look forward to; they were always fun, the gym was always filled and while three of the dances were formal, others were semi or casual. But they brought the students together for something other than walks down the hallways between classes.

Resurrection Sunday is on the horizon, but before resurrection comes honor (Palm Sunday) and rejection, followed by crucifixion, death and burial.  
As we meditate on the remedy for our self-centered choices, transgressions, iniquities, chaos which leaves us with  sin, sickness, and disease, we might compare it to antibiotics, inoculations and vaccines.  People who drink to excess, sometimes wake up and drink “a hair from the dog who bit them.”  They drink an alcoholic drink to remedy a hangover.   Originally connected to the folk remedy for rabies:  hair from a rabid dog was placed into the wound created when the dog bit someone.  Inoculations and vaccines take a small amount of bacteria from a disease and inject it into a healthy human who develops immunity to the disease and never gets a full-fledged case of the disease.  Some inoculations are actually made from dead bacteria or virus.

Some random thoughts after two straight weekends on the road:
• There’s something about sports.  We can grumble about a lot of things -- politics, rising prices, social media, the younger generation, poor drivers, the list goes on and on.
Nothing brings a community together better than sports, and for that matter, school events in general.  They bring us together.  What would we do without them during the winter months?  
Greybull fans certainly bought into this year’s team.  A lot of high school and college sports don’t attract the casual fan.  Go to a culminating event and you’ll mostly see parents in the stands.
But basketball is different -- at least in this town. While you can’t compete with Chiefs Nation anywhere and especially on its home turf, a significant number of Greybull fans traveled to Riverton two Saturdays ago for the regional final.

It is the story that plays itself out over and over again in our lives. Our eye is drawn to something that at first only piques our curiosity. But what was only something fleeting becomes something that holds our attention and then becomes an obsession. The garden narrative found in the opening pages of the Bible describes a world of unimaginable harmony. Man and woman living as they were designed and created to live: in relationship with God, each other and creation. Living as it was meant to be, as we were meant to be.
But there was something that crept in, that drew the eye, something that captured the imagination.

Dear editor:
Huge thanks to Sherrie Asp Winkler for her efforts to assure that the memories of the Greybull Junior High School Dinosaurs didn’t completely disappear. I didn’t know that the Greybull JHS mascot was once the dinosaur until I saw the old GJHS banners hanging in Sugar Shack for the first time in the early 2000s. When the Sugar Shack closed, I asked Sherrie what she was going to do with the banners and the next thing I knew she had them boxed up to give to me.  Such generosity!
The banners that Sherrie and Margo saved from the dumpster span 1938 through 1959. The 1938 banner included the drawing of a dinosaur that was so similar to the vintage Sinclair dinosaur logo that it was easy to see that one inspired the other.  

Procession observer says she’s proud of her hometown

Dear editor:
I am so proud of the Greybull Police Department.   Among  the hundreds of law enforcement vehicles on Friday, March 1, your cruiser was one of the first in the procession to pay respects to our fallen officer, Nevada Krinkee. In addition, the Basin PD was also in the procession that took almost an hour from North Main to Sheridan College south of Sheridan.
Officer Krinkee was killed in the line of duty while trying to serve a trespassing
notice. There are many items on YouTube and MTN News also. He leaves his young wife and new baby.
I lived in Greybull from 1946 to 1962 and I still call it my hometown.  
Well done, Greybull.

Tournament tidbits and trivia

It’s all over but the shouting, and Coach Burningham and the Greybull Buffs were doing a lot of that when they were presented with the consolation trophy Saturday morning at the Casper Event Center. On their way to the consolation finish, the Buffs staged a double-overtime victory over Kemmerer Friday--probably the most exciting game of the three days. The crowd at the Event Center was rocking; it was an exciting game to watch.
The Tongue River girls won the 2A championship, the first in a long while. Their opponent, Lingle, gave the Eagles all they could handle, so it was a fun game to watch.
Fans want to see close games in the championships. We watched the tag end of the 1A girls game and it was a blow-out. You can’t help but feel sorry for those players, giving everything they have, reaching deep, but so out-manned (sorry, that may be considered a wrong word to use).
