School board talks alternative schedule, salaries

Big Horn County School District No. 3’s Board of Trustees approved an alternate schedule for the 2026-27 school year at their April 14 meeting, contingent on state authorization. The proposed calendar includes seven “high impact days” when the school would close, falling on Fridays with the exception of one Thursday: Oct. 30, Nov. 6, Dec. 11, Jan. 15, Feb. 25, March 5 and May 14.

Commission appoints three to fair board

The Big Horn County Commissioners appointed three new members to the fair board on April 7. Those appointed to the board are Eron Lampman, Jesse Dewey and Dan VanderPloeg.

Nineteen Greybull students attended the state FFA convention in Cheyenne April 8-11, earning the Gold Star Chapter Award. 

Van Dyke’s National Parks quilt to benefit local PEO chapter

Marquerite Van Dyke, with assistance from Patsy King, presented her National Parks quilt at the regular monthly meeting of Greybull P.E.O. Chapter F. The quilt is a labor of love by Van Dyke with the proceeds of ticket sales supporting the efforts of the chapter. The quilt will be on display in various locations throughout Greybull, and tickets available from P.E.O. members, with the drawing for the winning ticket being held on July 4.

Part III: The Big Horn Basin’s roaring ’20s were about progress, not jazz

As the 1920s began, the Big Horn Basin was still a relatively isolated place. World War I had just ended, and the Spanish Influenza still lingered in memory. The region depended almost entirely on farming, ranching, and mining. Most families traveled to church and school by wagon. Roads over the Big Horns were little more than muddy trails, passable only for brief windows in the summer. The route from Cody to Yellowstone’s East Entrance was rough, often requiring pack horses and a guide.

Out of control burn surges to 160 acres between Basin, Otto

A man-made fire grew to an estimated 160-acres between Basin and Otto on Monday. Basin Volunteer Fire Department was called out to Greybull River Road near the intersection with Highway 30 around 3:30 p.m., soon joined by Burlington, Greybull, Manderson and Worland fire departments. 

Big Horn County takes on library governance and staffing questions

Two of Big Horn County’s commissioners attended the April 8 meeting of its library board in Greybull on Wednesday, April 8 with the intention of ironing out a list of issues: board member dismissal, the library director position and published comments among them. Commissioners Bruce Jolley and Dave Neves joined an audience of five concerned citizens, all invited by library board members Nikole Greene, Lea Sorenson and Cari Waterworth.
