Sept. 9 — 2:36 p.m.: A traffic stop at the Greybull Rest Area resulted in a citation.
3:34 p.m.: A traffic stop at the high school resulted in a warning.
Sept. 10 — 7:28 a.m.: A traffic stop on South Sixth Street and Eighth Avenue South resulted in a warning.
10:45 a.m.: An officer assisted another agency at a North Fifth Street location.
1:58 p.m.: A traffic complaint was received about a vehicle on North Sixth Street.
Sept. 11 — 9:26 a.m.: A guardian dog was found on Horseshoe Lane.

100 Years Ago: Raiding chickens cause a stir

Several complaints have been received about chickens that are allowed to forage in neighboring gardens and flower beds.  Town ordinance requires chickens to be confined in pens from April 1 until all gardens are gone. This is the season for tomatoes and pickles and the chicken is a troublesome sampler. Keep the chickens at home!

Stothart returns for NWC Writers Series in October

Author and Northwest College Professor Emeritus of English Rob Stothart is returning to speak at the 2024 fall edition of the Northwest College Writers Series, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Hinckley Library Amphitheater. The free event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

PACT Act contributed to record breaking VA benefits for 2024 fiscal year

SHERIDAN (WNE) — With the help of the PACT Act, veterans across the country have received a record number of benefits for the 2024 fiscal year.
According to a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs press release, 1.1 million veterans have been granted benefits.
The PACT Act was signed into law in 2022 and expands access to VA health care for veterans exposed to toxins while serving. More specifically, all veterans exposed to toxins while serving will be eligible to enroll directly in VA health care without applying for VA benefits first.

Michigan man charged with poaching, wasting nine mule deer in Cody

POWELL (WNE) — Authorities say a 20-year-old Michigan man recently poached nine deer in the City of Cody, then left their carcasses to waste.
Joshua T. Wielhouwer is alleged to have used a compound bow to kill does, bucks and a fawn between late August and early September. The mule deer were generally killed around the Park County Complex.

Rodriguez-Williams to chair Wyo. Freedom Caucus

POWELL (WNE) — Coming off a dominant victory in last month’s primary election, state Rep. Rachel Rodriguez-Williams, R-Cody, has been tabbed as the next leader of the Wyoming Freedom Caucus.
The caucus, which has sought to move the Wyoming Legislature further to the right, announced Monday that Rodriguez-Williams had been unanimously chosen as its chairman for the next two years.
She takes over from Rep. John Bear, R-Gillette.

‘Preliminary construction work’ on temple begins

POWELL — After securing a favorable court ruling last month, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says it’s starting work on its new temple in Cody.
“Preliminary construction work is now underway on the property and a ceremonial groundbreaking service will be scheduled in the future,” church media relations manager Sam Penrod said in a Tuesday statement to the Tribune.
Meanwhile, neighbors opposed to the location say they’ll continue to challenge the project in court.

Gas prices edge slightly higher in Wyoming

CHEYENNE (WNE) — Average gasoline prices in Wyoming have risen 0.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.29 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy.com’s survey of 494 stations in Wyoming.
Prices in Wyoming are 4.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, and stand 62.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.
According to GasBuddy price reports, the lowest price in the state Sunday was $2.79, while the highest was $4.29, a difference of $1.50 per gallon.

Sage-grouse lek attendance increases

CHEYENNE — Sage-grouse lek attendance has increased according to data from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department lek counts this spring. In 2024, lek attendance increased by 33 percent compared to last year. The appearance of more birds at leks is thought to be due to the natural population cycles of sage-grouse combined with good moisture that benefited sagebrush habitat.

G&F preps for more CWD monitoring

CHEYENNE — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department needs help from hunters this fall to collect CWD samples from deer, elk and moose for chronic wasting disease testing. Samples are requested across Wyoming in key deer and elk hunt areas.
The department has tracked the distribution and prevalence of CWD since 1997 to better understand its distribution and prevalence in Wyoming’s deer, elk and moose populations. Hunter-submitted samples are crucial to managing the disease in wildlife herds.
