We were a surprised as we searched through the 1924, 1934 ... issues of the Standard to find just a handful of Letters to Santa penned by our elementary students.  What follows is the total of the letters printed. Here they are, just as written by the young students. 

Our gift from the Giving Tree

Over 20 years ago our family pulled a tag off a local Giving Tree, thinking we’d give a needy child a holiday gift or two. As the experience evolved, we received an extraordinary gift from the young lady whose name we selected. What my family and I received burns brightly today.

In the Old Testament, joy is a place whose pathways are strewn with tears.  Psalm 126:5-6: “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.  He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”

Healthy Thoughts: SMART goals and the new year

New Year’s celebrations bring thoughts of renewal, new beginnings and often spark New Year’s resolutions. Making a resolution to get healthier is always a good goal, but often we will set ourselves up for failure by resolving to make a big change without any ability in our daily lives to stick to it. By all means, if you can accomplish a big change, do it. However, if you are like me and many of us normal humans, I recommend that you shoot for a more realistic and achievable goal.

The holiday season seems to be in full swing. With Thanksgiving under our belts (both literally and figuratively) and Christmas and New Year’s in the not-so-distant future, hopefully we can take a moment to reflect on the past year and look to the new year with a brightness of hope for our country, for our state, for our town and for every individual.
