JV football team wraps up season with 6-man games

The Greybull Buffs didn’t have a varsity game, but that didn’t prevent them from enjoying the final week of the 2023 regular season.  
Instead of dwelling on an Oct. 13 loss to Riverside, the Buffs played two six-man JV games, traveling to Burlington Monday, Oct. 16 and hosting St. Stephens on Thursday, Oct. 19.
Made up almost entirely of freshmen, the squad struggled in their six-man debut, losing big to the Huskies, who have one of the top programs in the state.
The St. Stephens game, meanwhile, turned into a celebration of the spirit of high school football.  
Even though low numbers forced the Eagles to cancel all eight of their regular season nine-man games, a small core of players continued to practice, hoping for an opportunity play a game.
It finally came in week eight.

JV, C teams show potential in final week

The Lady Buff JV squad used strong defense to win its final two games of the season, beating Shoshoni 25-22, 25-19 on Friday and Big Horn 25-20, 25-21 on Saturday.
Coach Christine Armel said her team “had an amazing night in Shoshoni,” crediting Perla Rodriguez for the improvement she’s shown in her front-row attacks along with Camila Acuna, who “did a great job working the net with blocks as well as attacks.”
The girls continued their strong play on Saturday, sweeping Big Horn.
“Julie Lopez did a great job in her passing skills as well as covering the back row, Shayne Cheatham stepped up and picked up a lot of passing and had a steady game, and Fatima Chavez and Wyatt Whaley led in serves,” said Armel. “The JV girls had a great season and have come a long way from our first games.
“I am proud of how hard they have worked on their skills as well as being a team and supporting one another.”

The Greybull Buffs scored more points in week seven than they did in weeks five and six combined, but the result was the same as a 24-14 loss to Riverside Friday night brought their 2023 season to a close.

It was Greybull’s third straight loss and the final death blow to the team’s playoff hopes.  The Buffs will be credited with a win by forfeit over St. Stephens this week and finish at 4-4.

While qualifying for the playoffs was everyone’s goal, Coach Jeremy Pouska said he liked the way his young team competed and left everything on the field.

Lady Buffs lock up conference title

The Greybull Lady Buffs head into the final weekend of the regular season needing only a win over Shoshoni to finish unbeaten in conference play.

The conference title and a No. 1 seed for the upcoming Class 2A West Regional in Riverton were secured Saturday afternoon, when the girls clipped Wind River 25-10, 13-25, 25-8, 27-25 to improve to 21-6-2.

“Up and down” is how Coach Sara Schlattmann described her team’s play.

“We had some really great hustle moments and then some moments where we seemed to lose focus,” she said. “I was  proud that we pulled it out in the end, but  as we head into this weekend, regionals and state, we will need to do a better job of managing the match.”

Greybull served well, misfiring on only two to finish at 97%.  Everyone topped 90%.

Hunter harvests 7x7 elk during opening weekend

Travis Marshall was among the big-game hunters who filled a tag on opening weekend, harvesting a massive 7x7 bull elk on public land in area 41.

If his name sounds familiar, it could be because Travis is the point man in Wyoming for Combat Warriors, Inc., a nonprofit organization that organizes and promotes events that bring together active duty and veteran soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen for hunting and fishing adventures around the country.

He’s a 2001 graduate of Greybull High School who went on to become a Green Beret and get deployed three times to Afghanistan, twice to Iraq and once to Ukraine, before retiring in Shell.

GMS netters post third-place finishes in conference tourneys

Both the seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams finished third in their respective conference tournaments last weekend.

The eighth grade Buffs competed in Meeteetse where they opened action Saturday playing Ten Sleep. They tossed the Pioneers in two sets, which propelled them into the semi-finals to face Burlington.

The Lady Buff JV team split with Tongue River and Rocky Mountain in volleyball action last weekend.

The Eagles were revved up for homecoming last Friday and tossed the Buffs in two sets, 15-25, 19-25.

Netters fall in TR, but clip Rocky in three

Coach Sara Schlattmann was “very pleased” with the performance of her athletes last weekend. The Buffs lost a hard-fought, five-set match to Tongue River in Dayton Friday, 25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 8-15, but came back Saturday to host Rocky Mountain and show them the door in three sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-15.

Of the two matches, Rocky Mountain was the more important because it was a conference game.

Buffs’ playoff hopes take a hit

The Greybull Buffs saw their playoff hopes take a major hit on Thursday, losing to Wind River 49-0 in Pavilion to drop to 2-3 in Class 1A West Conference action.

The loss put the Buffs in a tough spot, desperately needing not only a win, but a convincing one over Riverside on Friday night to extend their season beyond this week.
