GHS students voice support for CNA program

The Big Horn County School District No. 3 board of trustees received positive reviews at its May 14 meeting from the high school students who were enrolled in the new CNA certification class.
Available to students 16 and older, the class was offered as a response to student interest and the local and nationwide shortages in the healthcare field.

Building on its successful debut last year, Big Horn County School District No. 3 held its second annual Buff Champion Banquet and Awards Ceremony Monday, May 20.
The event recognized excellence from the 2023-24 school year, celebrating the students, athletes, coaches, support personnel and fans who made a difference in their schools.

Shell Community church announces Vacation Bible School dates
Shell Community Church has announced the dates of its Vacation Bible School.  The session will run from Monday, June 10 through Thursday, June 13, 1 to 3:30 p.m. each day. Kids aged 3 through the sixth grade are invited to participate.
The church is located at 219 Smith Ave., in Shell.

Transportation from Greybull will be provided.

Retiring music teacher felt most job satisfaction after Christmas programs

Kathy Clucas has cleaned out her desk, packed up her favorite songs, said goodbye to the students she has enjoyed working with and taken a last look at the three Greybull schools where she has spent the last 20 years teaching music.
Clucas is retiring a year earlier than she had planned due to health concerns. “I was diagnosed with Meniere’s syndrome, which is a condition affecting the inner ear. Music obviously has a lot to do with sound. It has become very difficult to manage this while teaching music,” she explained.

Correction Voters did not have to be registered by May 15 to cast ballots in primary and general elections

A story that appeared in last week’s issue contained an erroneous statement about voter registration. The story, which originally appeared in the Casper Star-Tribune and was circulated to the state’s papers by the Wyoming News Exchange, incorrectly suggested that voters cannot vote in the primary election if they aren’t registered by May 15.
In reality, voters can register to vote anytime, including the days of the primary and general elections, according to Big Horn County Clerk Lori Smallwood.

Red C. Miller was killed instantly early Tuesday morning at the bluff at the stone quarry south of town. The Burlington man had been getting stone for rip-rap and ballast and loading them on a work train.

Dr. I.W. Mefferd of Ainsworth, Nebraska has purchased the jewelry store of E.W. Swensen and the store will be reopened Saturday under the new owner.

Fence project needs volunteers

The Big Horn Fence Initiative will be removing half a mile of barbed wire fence and posts on Beaver Creek Ranch to benefit wintering wildlife.
Anyone willing to volunteer for a couple of hours of work should meet at 8:30 a.m. on June 15 at the dinosaur tracks turnoff (Red Gulch Road) on Highway 14 between Shell and Greybull. Once at the turnoff, there will be a carpool to the fence that will be about a half an hour drive, then the next couple of hours will be spent removing the fence.

Law Day brings students to courthouse

There was a lot of excitement on the front steps of the Big Horn County Courthouse on the morning of Tuesday, May 15. A beloved para-educator was “arrested” in front of the fifth-grade classes from Basin and Greybull elementary schools.
But have no fear…it was all just pretend and done as part of Law Day presentation put on by local court staff, attorneys, law enforcement and legislators.
