Buffs held down in losses to Burlington, Wind River

The Greybull Buffs were unable to get on track in their first two games of the new year, as they continued to be plagued by a sputtering offense in a 65-43 loss in Burlington Thursday night and a 68-44 setback in their home opener against Wind River Saturday afternoon.

Greybull took a 1-5 record into its game Tuesday night in Thermopolis, and with the start of Class 2A Northwest Conference play on the horizon, time is starting to run out in the search for answers to what ails the Buffs.

In both games last week, the Buffs played inspired ball early despite the absence of one of their top scorers and rebounders in Jesus Hernandez, who was out sick. Irving Castro, another regular, played in Burlington but missed the Wind River game.

Winter sports seasons resuming

The two-week vacation gave Coach Kyndra Goton and the Lady Buffs time to regroup, get healthy and hone a few skills in preparation for the 2021 season opener; the Buffs will be in Burlington today to play the Lady Huskies at 4/5:30.

“Practices over the break were good,” Goton said. “The girls  worked hard. We wanted to get as much time in the gym as possible.”

Four returning starters give Buffs hope

The Greybull Buffs came within a basket of qualifying for last year’s State 2A Basketball Championships. As disappointing as that 50-48 regional loss to Tongue River was, coaches and players found comfort in the fact that the core of the team would get another shot.

Ben Kraft was the only senior who saw quality minutes in Riverton and his combination of scoring (11.3 ppg), defense and leadership will be tough to replace. But on the sunny side, the Buffs return everyone else who contributed to that regional squad, including seniors Jesus Hernandez and Isaac Thueson. 

Hernandez, a forward/center, averaged 8.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while Thueson went for 10.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game

Hernandez makes all-state, four make all-conference

The Greybull Buffs saw one of their players, senior Jesus Hernandez, make the all-state team and four earn a spot on the all-conference first team following the completion of the first nine-man football season in state history.

Hernandez was among the state’s premier defenders.  An end, he was a big-play machine, finishing with 17 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks.  The 23 behind-the-line-of-scrimmage stops topped all 1A defenders.   Statewide, he ranked sixth in defensive points, averaging 20.8 per game.

Hernandez’s offensive stats included 16 rushing attempts for 40 yards and eight receptions for 95 yards.

State champion Southeast reaped the most awards, with Mark Bullington winning coach of the year, Shawn Burkart assistant coach of the year and Harrison Hall lineman of the year.  Lusk’s Drake Lamp was named the offensive player of the year while Tryston Truempler won defensive player of the year.

Lady Buffs season ends with losses to Big Horn, TR

The Greybull Lady Buffs gave everything they had and a little bit more when they played the Big Horn Lady Rams in the opening round of the 2A state volleyball tournament in Casper Nov. 5.

Playing what could have been their best match of the year, the Buffs went out swinging, not giving an inch. Their fight and determination gave them wins in the first two sets, 25-17, 25-18. 

Things were looking very good.

“We thought we had them. The girls came out flying,” said Coach Madison Moody. The third set was as tight as the first two, but this time the win went to Big Horn 24-26. The next two sets and the match went to the Rams, 19-25, 8-15.

There were some great stats in this match. Shayla Cheatham had 11 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces and 23 digs; Kaylyn Burns had 35 digs, 2 assists and Kylin Stephens had 2 kills, 2 blocks, 3 aces, 14 digs and 21 assists.

Buffs fall in double OT, face Lusk in playoff opener

The Greybull Buffs saw an opportunity to win their final home game and build some momentum for  the playoffs slip from their grasp on Friday night, losing an entertaining, double-overtime thriller to Lingle-Fort Laramie, 40-34.

As disappointing as the setback was, it didn't change Greybull's playoff fate. With Riverside going down in Shoshoni, the Buffs settled into the No. 3 spot in the West, thanks to a better point differential in games against conference opponents, and will travel to Lusk for their playoff opener on Friday.   Riverside claimed the West's No. 4 seed and plays Southeast.  Wind River, the conference's fifth team, did not make the playoff field.

Lingle-Fort Laramie entered the game with the same record as the Buffs, 2-5, but knowing that it would not in the playoff field.  The Doggers went 1-5 in the 1A East, which unlike the West that lost St. Stephens and Wyoming Indian due to COVID-19 concerns, consisted of seven teams.

Buffs beat Riverside 28-12, move into three-way tie in conference

Facing a must-win situation, the Greybull Buffs scored 22 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Riverside 28-12 and keep their playoff hopes alive Friday night in the first gridiron matchup between the two rival schools since 2014.

The Buffs entered play as the only team in the West without a conference win.  When the final horn sounded, they had moved into a three-way tie with the Rebels and the Wind River Cougars, all of whom are vying for the league's final two spots in the playoffs which begin Oct. 30.

It was the second consecutive wire-to-wire win for the Buffs, who improved to 2-4.

"In the moment, and even more so looking back, I was very pleased with how the game went," said Coach Eli Moody. "The effort was there from the first play to the last play."

Lady Buffs notch wins over north-end rivals

The Lady Buffs celebrated Homecoming with a clean sweep of their two opponents, conference foe Rocky Mountain Friday in five hotly contested sets, 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11, and a much easier three-set victory over Lovell Saturday, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16.

Coach Maddy Moody said her team took the floor Friday strong and ready but “fell apart a little in games two and three.”

Down 1-2, the  Buffs had to settle in and win the next two sets.

Coach Moody said in the two losing sets, “We switched some defensive strategies which threw off my defenders. We went back to our old defense and that helped a lot.”

The stat sheets had Brie Benasky with eight kills; Elaina Howe with seven and Shayla Cheatham, five; Abby Keisel had 12 assists; Kylin Stephens  had six assists and three kills. Libero Kaylyn Burns had 30 “perfect” passes.

Cook wins 3A golf title

In a span of about 15 months, Greybull teen Erika Cook went from shanking tee shots and hating the sport of golf to becoming a state champion and leading Lovell High School to the first state golf title in school history.

Home opener ends in heartbreak

The first nine-man football game played on Greybull's home field was a thriller, with the Buffs and visiting Wind River trading blows until final seconds when a defensive stand sent the Cougars home with the 14-13 win.

The loss was Greybull's second straight to begin the season.
