Buffs open with two wins in Glenrock

They didn’t get a sweep, but the Greybull Buffs gained a pair of wins — and every bit as important, some insights about themselves and where they need to improve — at last weekend’s Herder Classic in Glenrock.

Greybull lost its opener to Wright, 68-59, but rallied to claim its next two, downing 3A Glenrock 48-39 and 1A Kaycee 48-36 to leave town with a winning record.  While thankful for that, Coach Logan Burningham wasn’t particularly pleased about his team’s play.

Turnovers were a problem — the Buffs had 33 against Wright, 27 against Glenrock and 30 against Kaycee.  The miscues against Wright were one thing; the Panthers return nearly everyone from last year’s squad which placed fifth at state and full-court, man-to-man pressed the Buffs the entire game. Making matters worse, the Buffs were missing their starting point guard, Coby Henderson.

Two win conference wrestling titles

The girls got it done in Thermopolis.  Elli Holloway and Tawny Bertolini claimed Greybull-Riverside’s only conference titles at Saturday’s Big Horn Basin Conference Tournament in Thermopolis, going a combined 4-0 with four pins.

Holloway won the 138-145 division, Bertolini the 126-132 division.

They took different paths to get to the same place.

Holloway was dominant all season, but got a stiffer-than-expected test in the final from Harlie Velarde of Lander.   “That girl came to wrestle, intent on beating us,” said Coach Mark Sanford.  “Elli has been able to ‘woman-handle’ other girls, but (the Lander girl) stayed in good position and didn’t allow Ellie to do that.” Just one point separated the wrestlers after the first and second periods before Holloway eventually recorded a pin at the 3:59 mark of the match.

With Thanksgiving now in the rear view, Greybull High School teams have begun ramping up for their respective season openers, all of which are scheduled for the weekend of Friday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 10.

As they typically do, Coach Rob Nuttall’s wrestlers will see their first action at the Powell Invitational.

As of Monday, his roster stood at 20.

“That’s a good number, although we’d always like a few more,” Nuttall said.

Wrestling teams were allowed to start practicing Monday, Nov. 21, so G-R got in a couple of days of work before Thanksgiving.  Fundamentals were the focus – good for all, but particularly for those lacking experience.

“We’ve got a good crew coming back from last year,” said Nuttall. “I foresee a good season, especially if we can get some of our younger guys to contribute.”

Buffs put two on all-conference grid team

The Greybull Buffs put two players on the all-conference team and one on the all-state squad following a campaign in which they went 3-5 overall and placed sixth in league play.

Seniors Jake Schlattmann and Aiden Reece were the all-conference selections and Schlattmann made the all-state team for a second consecutive season.

Shoshoni, which won the West, led the way with 10 all-conference selections, followed by Rocky Mountain with eight and Wind River with seven.

Schlattmann led the Buffs in nearly every statistical category and, as he did in his junior season, was up among the statewide leaders in 1A nine-man in defensive points.

Schlattmann ranked sixth in the state, averaging 20 defensive points per game.  His final line consisted of 81 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.

Lady Buffs play well but fall short at 2A State tournament; fall to Burns, Rocky

The Lady Buffs might have lost their two matches at the State 2A Tournament in Casper, but they came home as winners, nonetheless. They met Burns in the opener Thursday and lost 28-30, 28-26, 16-25, 17-25. Burns went on to win the 2A championship and the Buffs played them point-for-point in the opener.

The loss sent Greybull into the consolation bracket where they met their conference nemesis, Rocky Mountain. The Buffs gave the Grizzlies all they could handle, but fell short, 26-21, 25-27, 19-25, 24-26.

Third-place finish propels Buffs to State

The Buffs wanted it. They entered the Class 2A West Regional in Lander with one goal – to earn a trip to Casper. Mission accomplished. Now on to the next challenge.

The Buffs knew going in the classic rule is that to earn a trip to State, you have to win two matches before you lose two. They did that in spades. They lost just one match and won three.

They opened against Big Piney and took the Punchers 20-25, 25-19, 25-25, 25-16, setting up a second-round match with conference foe and top-seed Rocky Mountain. The match was hard fought, with the Buffs winning set one 25-17, losing the second match in overtime, 26-28, and then losing the third and fourth sets, and the match, 17-25, 14-25.

That was the team’s only loss. They got by Wind River in a loser-out match, 25-19, 26-24, 25-18. That win cinched the trip to State, and the third win, over Kemmerer, 26-24, 25-21, 25-19, gave Greybull a third seed.

Buffs face Big Piney in regional opener

The Lady Buffs go into the West Regional Tournament in Lander this weekend as the No. 3 seed from the Northwest and will face the Lady Punchers from Big Piney in Friday’s opener.

Greybull is coming off a weekend split with Shoshoni and Big Horn, topping the Lady Blue of Shoshoni in four sets, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23, and taking a three-set drubbing at the hands of Big Horn in the regular season closer, 20-25, 13-25, 17-25.

Looking at the win over Shoshoni, Coach Sara Schlattmann noted, “It was a fantastic team effort that helped us land the win over Shoshoni Friday night for our last home match.” The team served an excellent 92% led by Kelsey McColloch, Fatima Chavez and Josselyn Jara; all three were perfect from behind the service line. “Both Fatima and Josselyn came off the bench and really just provided a huge spark for us and I was very proud of them, as that a be a difficult situation to be in,” Schlattmann concluded.

Buffs drop finale to Riverside, finish 3-5

Whatever could go wrong, did go wrong for the Greybull Buffs in their 2022 season finale.

Already eliminated from the playoffs, a year’s worth of bragging rights was the only thing on the line for the Buffs Friday night in Basin.  For the next calendar year — just like they have for the past one — they will belong to Riverside, which pasted the Buffs 48-8.

The Buffs will finish the season with a 3-5 overall record and 2-5 mark in conference play after they are credited with a win by forfeit over St. Stephens, which cancelled its season (including its week eight game against the Buffs) due to a lack of players.

GMS teams combine to post 10-3 record

Greybull Middle School enjoyed a highly successful season on the gridiron, as its eighth, seventh and sixth grade teams combined to win 10 of 13 contests against their rivals in the Big Horn Basin. 

Buffs lose “pink game” to Rebels; come back strong at Thermopolis Invitational

Greybull had a long string of matches last week, starting with the Sept. 27 Pink Game in Basin against traditional rival, Riverside, and ending Saturday at the Thermopolis Invitational where they won the Silver bracket championship.

“We had a strong end to our week of volleyball,” Coach Sara Schlattmann commented. “And really that is what you hope for.”

They fell to Riverside 8-25 16-25 16-25. Speaking of the match, Schlattmann said, “There was a great turnout for the match and it is always a fantastic fundraiser for a strong (breast cancer) cause. We didn‘t have our best match, but I will credit Riverside who has a strong team and played very well.”

The invitational tournament Friday and Saturday included a 12-team field. “It was good to get to play some teams we hadn’t played before,” Schlattmann said.
