Schlattmann paces G-R at State

Jake Schlattmann, Ty Strohschein, Loomis Alexander and Curtis Strohschein placed and several others won at least one match to power Greybull-Riverside to an 11th-place finish at last weekend's State 2A Wrestling Championships at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.

G-R scored 3.5 more points than it did last year, but fell one spot in the final standings.  Kemmerer, with three champions, won the 2A crown this year, finishing with 218 points.  Moorcroft, with 171, and Big Piney, with 150, rounded out the top three, followed by Lovell, Cokeville, Thermopolis, Lingle-Fort Laramie, Shoshoni, Wind River and Saratoga.

Coach Rob Nuttall's team took just one senior, Schlattmann, to the culminating event.

Buffs clinch Northwest's No. 3 seed

The Greybull Buffs held off Shoshoni 64-59 Friday to sew up the Northwest Conference's third seed for this weekend's Class 2A West Regional. They'll face Big Piney in an opening-round matchup today (Thursday, Feb. 23) in Riverton.

Greybull finished the regular season at 10-9 overall, 2-4 in conference play.

Both league wins came at Shoshoni's expense, although the second came harder than the first.

"Shoshoni's a tough place to play with good atmosphere, so to get a win down there always feels pretty good," said Coach Logan Burningham.  "And we needed it. Going into the tournament, you definitely want a little momentum."

The Buffs led at every quarter stop, although Shoshoni certainly made it interesting.

"The key for us was our offense," said Burningham. "We executed so well. We didn't have many possessions that didn't end in a good shot. We ended up shooting 54% from the field, which is what you want. 

Buffs fall to 1-4 in conference play

If they ultimately fall short of qualifying for the state tournament, the Greybull Buffs may end up kicking themselves for the close games that slipped from their grasp during the regular season.

The Buffs dropped to 9-8 overall, 1-4 in conference play after a one-point loss to Rocky Mountain Friday night at Buff Gym and a two-point loss to Wind River Saturday afternoon in Pavilion.

Three of Greybull's four conference losses (and four of their eight total losses) have been by two points or less. 

"It's definitely disappointing because in those conference games we were right there at the end, but just couldn't pull them out," said Coach Logan Burningham.  "We still have a lot of things we need to smooth out."

Alexander, Rosales top placers at home tourney

Freshman Loomis Alexander was the only Greybull-Riverside wrestler to reach finals while Caiden Sorenson, Jake Schlattmann, Erik Rosales and Curtis Strohschein joined him as placers at Saturday's Greybull Memorial Invitational at Buff Gym.

The tournament followed closely on the heels of a G-R dual win over Wright on Friday night.

Coach Rob Nuttall called it "a bit of an up and down" weekend for his team, which was lacking one of its top point scorers in 182-pounder Ty Strohschein.  The slightly-banged-up junior was held out as a precaution, with an eye on regionals coming up Feb. 17.

Friday night provided a highlight, as G-R rode contested-match wins by Schlattmann, Kevin Rosales and Alexander to a 42-28 win over Wright.

Buffs notch first conference win

Nonconference matchups with Big Horn and Tongue River were casualties of the weather, but the Greybull Buffs got the one they had to have, beating Shoshoni 50-43 Friday night at Buff Gym for their first Northwest Conference victory of the season.

The Buffs had lost to Rocky Mountain and Wind River the previous week, so it was as close to a must-win as you'll see in late January.

"It set us up for a chance to steal a conference title and a top seed — if we can sweep the second half of conference games and depending how Rocky Mountain and Wind River come out in their second matchup," said Coach Logan Burningham. 

The Grizzlies beat the Cougars, 47-45, last week.   At 3-0, they lead the conference at the turn.

The win over Shoshoni moved the Buffs to 1-2.

"We had two good stretches, and in between, a bad third quarter that almost cost us," said Burningham.

His team came out hot, outscoring Shoshoni 15-4 in the first quarter.

Late FTs seal comeback win over Wind River

The Rocky Mountain Lady Grizzlies proved to be too much for the Lady Buffs to handle when the two teams met in Cowley in the first conference game of the season. The Grizzlies took a quick first quarter lead and went on to claim the 50-16 victory.

The Lady Buffs were in the friendly confines of their home gym Saturday and they took advantage of that to score a victory over the Lady Cougars from Wind River, 48-47.  It was an exciting climax to a game that looked impossible to win in the early going. But, as Coach Jeff Hunt has often said, there is “no quit” in his team.

Looking first at Saturday’s home win, Hunt said, “We didn’t look much better at the start of this game (than we did against RM). We came out very slow and Wind River was ready to play. They jumped to a 9-0 lead in the first few minutes.”

Strohschein, Alexander win Don Runner Invite titles

Junior Ty Strohschein and freshman Loomis Alexander won their weight classes and Greybull-Riverside placed fifth in a 13-team field at last weekend’s Don Runner Invitational in Pavillion.

Coach Rob Nuttall said he loved the way his team stepped up at the event, which was billed by some as a preview of the Class 2A West Regional.  With the exception of Cokeville and Kemmerer, all the teams that will be battling it out later this month for state tournament berths were in attendance.

“What a weekend for us,” Nuttall said.  “We got to see the hard work, grinding, running, conditioning and pace of practice all come together. 

“The quarterfinal round was huge for us — we put seven guys in the semis, and even though only two moved forward, on the backside we placed another three, which was great.”

Weekend sweeps sends Buffs into Classic with momentum

Wyoming Indian is known for momentum-changing scoring runs, but on Friday night at Buff Gym, the Chiefs found themselves on the receiving end of one that would have the made some of their all-time great teams proud.

Three minutes into the opening quarter, the No. 4 ranked team in 2A led 2-0.  Greybull hadn’t hit a shot and had two turnovers.  The run started simply enough — with banked-in 3-pointer by Coby Henderson with 4:56 to play.

By the time it was over, the Buffs had hung 26 on the Chiefs.  Greybull had 11 offensive possessions over the final 4:56, scoring on nine of them including six straight trips at one point.  Henderson hit four 3s, Cale Wright another three, plus one of the conventional hoop-and-harm variety. It was 26-10 after one.

Sled dogs take on the mountain

The sixth annual Bighorn Rush Sled Dog Challenge descended on the area Friday and Saturday bringing teams from across the region to compete at the Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area outside of Shell.
